The U.S. Mint has begun selling the long awaited commemorative coin celebrating 100 years of the Boy Scouts of America. Only 350,000 were minted and there's two types available: Proof ($39.95) and Uncirculated ($33.95). The coins are 90% silver, 10% copper and are 38.1 mm in diameter. It's not a bad coin but I was hoping for something a bit more. When I think of the Boy Scouts I think of the young teen helping an elderly lady across the street. It's cliche I know, and on a coin it would probably look silly. So here's the coin:

From the U.S. Mint's website:
"The obverse (heads side) depicts a Cub Scout in the foreground with a Boy Scout and female Venturer in the background saluting. Inscriptions are CONTINUING THE JOURNEY, 1910, 2010, IN GOD WE TRUST, and LIBERTY. This design represents the Boy Scouts of America of today, as the organization has recognized the need to include other programs for younger boys (Cub Scouts) and older boys and girls (Venturers), reflecting the diversity of our Nation. It is a dramatic representation of how the Boy Scouts of America has evolved over the past century to form a strong foundation of leadership, service and community for all the youth of America.

The reverse (tails) features the Boy Scouts of Americas universal emblem. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, BE PREPARED, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and ONE DOLLAR.

The uncirculated coin, struck on specially burnished blanks, features a soft satin finish to the coin and its images. The proof 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar is extraordinarily brilliant and features sharp relief and a mirror-like background to highlight the images on both sides of the coin."

The website also says there is a limit of 100 coins per housesold--at least for the first 30 days. This makes me think this coin probably won't sell out as fast as some of the other commemoratives the mint has made. I could be wrong. I also hear that after the 22nd of April, the mint will be raising the prices a few dollars on both coins.

If you're wondering, "what about the Girl Scouts?" then worry no longer! The Girl Scouts will also get their own silver dollar coin in 2013. A bill authorizing the commemorative coin was signed into law on October 29, 2009. I'm going to grab a box of thin mint cookies while I wait.

***************** *** BOUNTY **** **************

I really want to see what these coins look like, stock pictures just don't cut it for me. So I'm offering a bounty for these wanted pictures! Add them to our database and in addition to the normal bragger tokens you are awarded, I'll award an extra 50 bragger tokens (25 for each side) for either a picture of the Proof or Uncirculated. If you can provide pictures of both versions front and back, then I'll double the bragger tokens awarded for a total of 200 bragger tokens. I want good clear coin pictures. No taking pictures from eBay auctions. If the pictures aren't yours, make sure you have permission to add them to CoinBrag.
