Last month I posted episode one of the Spare Change series. This episode focuses on the Morgan Dollar. It's about 10 minutes long and I thought it was worth sharing.

Some interesting notes:

The Morgan Dollar, named for the designer at the Philadelphia mint, was considered an unpopular coin at the time. It was described as ugly and bulky.

The first year of the Morgan Dollar was 1878 and had 3 varieties. The 3 varieties are based on the number of tail feathers of the eagle on the obverse of the coin. The eagle either has 8 tail feathers, 7 tail feathers or 7 tail feathers with 8 feathers underneath. The 7 over 8 is the rarest of the 3 versions with about 500,000 minted.

The reason there were no Morgan Dollars minted between 1905 and 1920 was because there were so many of them available that no more were needed until 1921 which was also the last year the Morgan Dollars were minted.
