So I have been planning out what I am calling "classes" for coins.

Think of a class like, "Buffalo nickels" or "Morgan dollars" for U.S. coins. Error coins would still be in the same class as the regular coins, but then circulating commemorative coins would get their own class.

Class will have information like who/what is on the obverse and reverse. Most likely the name of the artists who designed coins. Material compositions (e.g. 90% silver, 10% copper). With material compositions we'll be able to get the ASW/AGW values and by adding the daily values of precious metals we can have melt value appraisals on the spot. For mint marks we'll have what the mark means and where it's located.

When you view the pricing data page the class information will be pulled up for each coin.

Using classes will allow us to add data to many coins without having to manually go back and add the same information to many coins one at a time.

Class data may also carry other facts and trivia about the coin.

Classes will also have their own search feature and we'll choose existing coin pictures from each class to represent those classes.

I'm also going to work on adding two new optional fields for adding coins: total minted and commemorative. Like "variation," These will not be required to add a coin but if the bragger has that data on hand then they can add it (with a slight reward for the extra information assuming it is accurate). All of us will also be able to go into any current coin in the database and add those mint totals to existing coins. We'll also be able to specify whether or not a coin is a non-circulating commemorative. See the Boy Scouts coin for an example of a non-circulating commemorative.

I would also like to create pages for each country in our database with some history/facts about the country. We won't have too much information. We can add links to Wikipedia for those that really want to learn more.

I have a list of things I've been planning to add and I don't have the notebook nearby. I am curious to know what else you all would like to see? I really want CoinBrag to be the ultimate source for coin information while attempting to keep it short and sweet.

SO if you do the classes, would you still be able to seach 5 cent pieces and the results would go from liberty's to current still, but if you search through the classes it would come up with liberty, buffalo, war nickels, etc...? I think it would be cool to have the classes but I kinda like the way you get every nickel added at your disposal in the current search, know what I mean?

Yes, the current search will stay exactly the same. When you view the actual coin page that will look the same as well but would have some additional information imported from the classes.

I would create a separate browse/search for classes. My first thought for this is using it to identify coins. For instance, not everyone is able to deduce that Italia means Italy. So instead of browsing through 500 coins (or in the future 1500 or more), they could browse the class pictures and go from there.

I would try to integrate both searches so that we could hop between the two if there was a need. For instance, if I was browsing through the Washington quarters in the U.S. and I wanted to view all the coins from the 1932-1964 class, I could just click a link as opposed to having to start a search from scratch.

I definitely would not get rid of the current search nor would I attempt to add more hoops for us to jump through in order to get where we are going on the site.

One of my biggest peeves with other websites is that they drastically change their layouts, features and functions without regard to their membership. Sometimes improvements are very helpful, other times it is just fluff. I hope never to do that to us. I say us, because not only am I the president of the Coinbrag club, I'm also a client :)

Just a quick update, I've added total minted as well as the beginning of the class/type framework. You can now add mint totals to coins on the add page.

I'll need to work on a script to add mint totals to coins already in the database. That should not be too tough. The coin types/classes are currently invisible as they are not yet ready but I am very excited about letting them go live.

Definite things being added to coin types:

Diameter of coin in mm
Thickness of coin in mm
Type of edge (reeded, smooth, etc)
Obverse design
Obverse designer
Reverse design
Reverse designer
Purpose (commemorative, etc)

Further down the road:
Materials -- I want to make this easy, uniform and multipurpose
ASW/AGW -- once materials are added this will be easy.
Trivia -- I am not sure exactly how I want to do this. We could do line by line data similar to what IMDB does for actors. I could install wiki software and let us create wiki pages but fleshing out a coin wiki would be more work for everyone and I don't know if we want to do that.

Nicholas,
Please let me know if you need assistance with providing information about dividing the Briitish Commonwealth coin sections by reign & constitutional status.

I can't believe it's been over a year since I've started this thread. I've gotten quite a bit more to this finished though it's all still invisible.

I'm planning to allow us to add a lot of information to the coin classes. Aside from what I've already mentioned, I'm looking at other things like:

We'll finally have alternate dates for Hebrew, Muslim, Solar and other calendar systems.
Nicknames for coins (Lincoln pennies, toonies, etc)

I still don't have an ETA for this. Hopefully ASAP.

Nicholas,
Who knows, you could install http://www.photopost.com ,then you could try to import what has already been uploaded on here so far.

Yes,it would also be a way of encouraging the uploading of banknote photos as well.

What do you think?

That really wouldn't work for what I'm envisioning for the finished product. To get that to work how I'd want I'd have to gut it almost entirely. It's easier just to invent my own wheel in this instance. :)

Nicholas,
If you did download & install Photopost, you could get in touch with Vladimir Belyaev, who has http://www.zeno.ru ,as he could give you some technical advice as to how he managed to divide the gallery.

That still really wouldn't work. Anything they have there, we can have here plus more. :)
