I would break it down into: German Empire Weimar Republic Third Reich FDR Germany (West & Current) DDR Germany (East) Just a thought.

I had thought "Germany" would cover the empire, republic and 3rd Reich. But then we've got coins from West Germany listed under Germany and a separate FDR so that's going to cause confusion and duplicates. For the Empire, Republic and 3rd Reich, do we really need to separate them? None of the years overlap so there should be little confusion. Of course if we were to do that, having FDR as separate from 1946-1990 might be silly and should also be considered Germany leaving only East Germany deserving it's own unique section. I suppose we could separate them into different countries. To help the newbies when adding I could have dates on the add page like "Germany Empire 1871-1918" So the list would look like: German Empire 1871-1918 Germany Weimar Republic 1918-1933 Germany Third Reich 1934-1945 Germany FDR 1946-Date East Germany DDR 1946-1990 Of course when added to the database, the dates would not be added like that. Just the names. I may be wrong but I think the Holy Roman Empire would be coins from the various states and not needing it's own category. Any other thoughts on this? :)

Lets see, all FDR coins between 1948 and 1991 is it?, would be just FDR, but, would post 1991 coins go into just Germany or Germany FDR..I'm not sure. I don't think Holy Roman empire could fall under Germany at all. Some improvement could be made I am sure.

I believe Germany's official name is still FDR today. Krause's Standard Catalog of World Coins classifies the current Germany in with West Germany. Of course they also divide Germany into Empire, Weimar and Third Reich so perhaps there is some merit to that as well. I am taking your suggestion and immediately removing West Germany from the list. At the time that I added it, I was not entirely aware of how their coinage was set up. At the same time, I've been proposing "classes" for coins that could easily specify types of government. I think China is going to offer interesting questions as well. There have been a number of governments issuing coins there as well over the last few hundred years. When you brought up ROC (Taiwan) that was a good example. I would like to plan this all out logically so that when we classify one area one way, we can do the same for others. To get the categories for Germany correct, you need to have the following; German States - native currency systems (pre-1873). German States - Mark & Pfennig decimal currency (1872/3-1918). German Empire (1873-1918). Weimar Republic (1919-32). Nazi Germany - Weimar Republic types (1933-36). Nazi Germany - Swastika types (1936-45). Allied Occupation (1945-48). East Germany (1948-90). West Germany (1948-90). Germany - Deutschemark & Pfennig (1991-2001). Germany - Euro coins (since 2002). Aidan.
