Hi, I'm having some trouble identifying this coin. I can read the name Israel on the front, in hebrew and arabic, so I know that's where it's from. But the back has letters I can't translate. It doesn't correspond to a year or coin denomination. I posted the coin in Israel: 1 dollar so it's easy to find, and I will edit it if someone can steer me in the right direction. Any ideas?

Hmm, it's got me stumped. Doesn't seem to have a date on it and it doesn't appear in any catalogue I have..inclduing the Bank of Israel website. I'm wondering if it's a '1 Agora' token.

That's kinda what I was thinking, because it strongly resembles the earlier 1 agora coins. I did check the BOI website first, that's why I was totally confused when I didn't see it there! lol Is there anyone from Israel on this site that may know?

Another question: Is it better to list it as a "New Agora" or just "Agora" since over time it's no longer new. I'm thinking if it says "new" then we should add it as such.

I've had a word with an israeli friend who tells me the word is 'Shalom' under the big '1' (where the date should be). He reckons it is possibly a fake or a commemorative coin. He also doubts it could have been legal tender. He says he will ask around. Shalom means 'peace' and coupled with the olive branch (instead of three sprigs of wheat)..seems to suggest a commemorative of some description. Hold on to it..you may have something more interesting than you thnk.

Just Agora is fine with me..otherwise we'd have about 50 cases of 'new' this and 'old' that in the coin database.

Nicholas,
It makes sense to use 'New Agorah',as there was the 'Old Agorah' that was is use between 1960 & 1980.

Have a read here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Israeli_shekel .
