My aunt had a necklace with a $1 coin that looked like a Morgan/Liberty silver dollar, but was gold. Do you know of one actually minted in 1885 in gold, or was it plated or colorized? It cleaned up beautifully with no sign of gold coming off.

In 1885 there was a $1 gold coin but it would have been much smaller than a Morgan dollar. Morgan dollars are 38.1mm in diamater and the 1885 coin is 15mm which is smaller than a dime. Here's a sample of what one looks like: 1885 Gold dollar

Betty,
That has been gold-plated.

A Morgan Dollar is a large silver coin.

Aidan.
