I know the UK shrank the sizes of their coins back in the 70s. I wonder how confusing it is to have two different size coins of the same denomination in circulation at the same time. Here in New Zealand,we had both the old & new coins in circulation together for 3 months from July 2006.The withdrawal of the old coins was part of the exercise to pull the 5 Cents out of circulation. I had no problem distinguishing the sizes of both types of coins, considering that the then new coins all have plain edges, unlike the old coins. Fiji still has a 5 Cents in circulation, but I wouldn't be too surprised if that was pulled from circulation after their new issue comes out in June 2012. As for Western Samoa, the 1 & 2 Sene coins were hardly ever seen in circulation in the late 1990's.It is no surprise that they are being pulled from circulation. As to the 5 Sene, the spending power for that coin must have declined so much that it has been decided to discontinue it. So far we've managed to resist the removal. With the value of our dollar tanking though, I would not be surprised if it was discontinued in the next 6-7 years.

The Canadians have done like what Australia & New Zealand have done - replaced their 1 Dollar & 2 Dollars from notes to coins. From 2012,Canada will begin to have its first polymer plastic notes in circulation. I did a quick lookup on wikipedia and see quite a few countries have used them. So does a polymer banknote feel like plastic or paper?
